Kaj Franck Design Prize 2016The industrial designer Prof. Juhani Salovaara is the recipient of this year’s award

Every year Design Forum Finland, the Finnish design promotion organization, awards its design prize named after the famous Finnish designer Kaj Franck. This year the recipient of the prize is industrial designer Professor Juhani Salovaara.

Juhani Salovaara is one of Finland’s first designers to have specialised in industrial design since the beginning of his career. He has worked as a designer in several areas of industry and has been involved in introducing ergonomics and the principles of user-based design in Finland. Salovaara was one of the founders of Ergonomiadesign in 1973, the biggest design agency in Finland in its time. In 1989 it merged with Destem Design to ED-Design, which has followed the same course, creating many of the flagship products of Finnish design. Salovaara has also been active in several companies combining design with ecology.

Juhani Salovaara's views, which have been ahead of their times, originated already in the late 1960s when he worked for the Philips corporation’s design department in the Netherlands. His international career continued as a board member of Icsid in the mid-1970s.

Along with his career as a designer, Juhani Salovaara has taught industrial design and served as professor at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and Aalto University. He was, among other things, one of the founders of the renowned IDBM (International Design Business Management) program at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, later Aalto University. After his professional career, Salovaara has found a new interest as one of the founders of the Brinkhall Sparkling company producing sparkling wine from Finnish apples.

The Kaj Franck Design Prize is awarded to a designer or team innovatively creating both high-quality industrial design and unique, one-off works. The winners of the prize represent comprehensively top Finnish design. The prize sum of €10,000 is donated by the Finnish Fair Foundation.

The prize exhibition will be on show at Design Museum 11 November 2016–17 January 2017.
