2 17BEDA organises a survey of Design Remuneration tools within the EU

BEDA's professional Working Group aims to explore the methods, sources and/or tools available to professional designers of different disciplines, in different member states, to calculate their charge out rates.

Since the beginning of this century EU antitrust rules have made it increasingly difficult, in some cases even impossible, for national design bodies to publish current rates and calculation methods for the design sector, unless figures are based on general surveys and are at least one year old. However, the need for useful methods, solid tools and guidelines within the design industry is enormous, certainly so amongst young professionals and start up agencies. All professional bodies are, however, reluctant to gather and publish such tentative information.

BEDA believes that collecting whatever was, or still is, in use with the EU Professional associations to fill this need from the industry, will increase transparency and thus hopefully also offer a guiding light for both design professionals and their clients by determining Remuneration. All European professional associations, BEDA members as well as non-members, will be contacted soon with a request to share their materials and information. Following this information gathering, a conclusive review will be drawn up and shared with contributors, policymakers and all other stakeholders.

The Professional WG aims to publish the results of the survey during BEDA’s next General Assembly, which will be held in May 2016; whether this can be achieved depends heavily on the active involvement and response of BEDA members.
