START! Budapest Design Week

The event, with programmes for the public and professionals, happens between 6 and 15 October this year, with Denmark as the guest country.

Budapest Design Week primarily aims to raise awareness about the value, and the economic and social role of design, to improve trust in design and encourage communication between various actors of this field.

This series of events, which offer programmes to the public and the profession alike, takes place from 6 to 15 October this year. Early-stage talents, small and medium-sized enterprises in design will be in focus, organised around the slogan ‘START’.

Budapest Design Week attempts to visualise design as a set of innovative tools and approach, which would harmonically meet the functional and social demands and produce an indispensable device for the creation of products and services. To support this aim, the events include programmes both for the public at large (inaugurations of exhibitions, programs for children, thematic tours, workshop visits) and for the profession (round table discussions, professional lectures, conferences, prize winning galas, etc.), and other elements to explicitly support the work of economic policymakers (investors’ meetings, introduction of case studies, lectures, workshops). Beside their own programmes, organisers also provide a chance for professional partners to introduce themselves (museums, institutions, schools, shops, design studios, galleries, etc.). Budapest Design Week staff is striving to produce a diversity of genres so that the public can enjoy a great variety of the appearance of design, from industrial design to fashion, from interior design to designer graphics or from service design to UX/UI design.

Traditional design tours and open studios focus on start-ups, the presentation of starting businesses in design, their offices, workshops, etc.

As always, there is also a guest of honour country. This year Denmark, the country of happy people and hygge, will be in the spotlight with various lectures, workshops and exhibitions, dedicated to Danish design.

World-renowned designers such as Michael Anastassiades, Johannes Torpe and Marcel Wanders will give lectures concerning their current projects and their artwork.

Visitors to the seventeen selected Open Studios will gain an insight into the design and often even into their manufacturing processes, showing how designers and design studios are more and more prepared to interact with their customers and their audience.

The events are patronised and sponsored by the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, and professionally managed and supervised by the Hungarian Design Council.
