Few would contest that creativity is an essential attribute for modern businesses competing in a global market. Design approaches are widely and successfully used to generate innovative products and services. But design’s more strategic role at boardroom level is less well-understood: can the approach also create business growth and bring other long-term benefits?

Design being the surprising secret to an organisation’s success is a topic that the Design Council has been exploring. In their upcoming Design Summit: Leading Business by Design, the Design Council will highlight how some of the best known and pioneering businesses have harnessed the power of design to make them stand out in the market-place. From redesigning workplaces to creating high-performing teams, these organisations are using design to address a range of business areas, not just product and service design.

This year’s one-day conference is based on a research study conducted together with Warwick Business School to understand whether businesses that embed design throughout their organisation produce better business results. The emerging findings show that successful businesses are investing in design techniques to improve their processes, their culture and their working environment as well as adding value to products and services.

The conference will explore the different ways design can be embedded within an organisation for success by focusing on four different areas:
1. Adding Value - Using design to improve products and services
2. Winning Workplaces – Using design to create environments for success
3. Inspiring Culture Change – Using design to build high performance teams
4. Innovate and Succeed – Using design and technology to get ahead.

Providing real-life examples of the strategic use of design to differentiate from the competition, inform strategic choices and strengthen existing brands, guest speakers at this event are innovators from leading organisations including Rolls Royce, BERG, Barclays and Waitrose.

Leading Business by Design will be held at the celebrated British Museum in London on Wednesday 12th February 2014.
