When the town centre of Essen, Germany, is presented in its most beautiful light on the occasion of the 65th Light Weeks (65. Essener Lichtwochen), the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, located on the grounds of UNESCO world heritage Zollverein, will shine too: One focus of the special exhibition “Light & Shape” will be the field of lighting and lamps with regard to this year’s light weeks guest country Belgium, including, among others, “D2V2” by Belgian manufacturer Dark at night. The design of the cylindrical pendant lights is reminiscent of an aeroplane engine or an oversized ventilator. Being linearly integrated in the old industrial setting, the lights seem to float.
Visitors to the exhibition can look forward to outstanding products from further life worlds: In the Red Dot Design Museum Essen, household items are presented as well as furniture and lifestyle objects. The modular lounge concept “Elements” by Manutti fascinates as flexible outdoor furniture which has a clear design language that gives it a floating lightness. Moreover, the ultra-light luggage collection “Hartmann 7R” by Samsonite, which combines a powerful yet elegant appearance with a high degree of comfort and sturdy reliability for travelers, can be experienced by visitors at first hand: Touching and testing most of the exhibits is explicitly allowed, since outstanding design quality becomes apparent only in use.
