How can Austrian designers benefit from South Africa and how can Austria inspire the South African design scene? The design duo chmara.rosinke have curated an exhibition that was first presented in Cape Town, the »2014 World Design Capital«, in November 2014 and which will now be on display at the designforum Wien.

In what way can Austrian designers benefit from South Africa and how can Austria inspire the South African design scene? Starting out from this question, the design duo chmara.rosinke have curated an exhibition that was first presented in Cape Town, the »2014 World Design Capital«, in November 2014 and which will now be on display at the designforum Wien.

In order to promote a direct exchange between designers of each of the two countries, a series of workshops was created, which involved Austrian designers going to Cape Town in the autumn to develop contextual, simple objects together with South African designers. This exchange will be continued in Vienna, when two South African designers, Atang Tshikare and Renée Rossouw, join Valentin Vodev und Julia Landsiedl within the framework of the show to develop and realise a few objects.

The exhibition »Design Discourse: Austria – South Africa«, currently shown at the designforum Wien, presents social and material innovations, self-initiated production processes, and traditions of craftsmanship in a juxtaposition of some 40 Austrian and 30 South African design projects. The theme of the exhibition focuses on how young designers realise their own products and how they deal with the history of craft and design of their respective countries, be it the beginnings of industrial production or such artisanal techniques as weaving. »Design Discourse: Austria – South Africa« is meant to promote intercultural dialogue between Austria and South Africa and highlights numerous examples illustrating overlaps and resemblances between the design worlds of these two countries.

»Design Discourse: Austria – South Africa« has been initiated by AustriaDesignNet, which is an initiative launched 2012 by seven design institutions in order to present Austrian design abroad and communicate the activities outside of Austria in a unified form. AustriaDesignNet is composed of Creative Industries Styria, Creative Region Linz & Upper Austria, departure, designaustria, designforum Wien, MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art in Vienna, and the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK.
