18_WoodWorksWood Works – exhibition at the Design Flanders Gallery, 14/02/2014 - 13/04/2014

As you might suspect from the title, all of the objects in the ‘Wood, the new gold’ exhibition are made using wood. Wood plays an essential role in each of them, either due to its technical properties, or because of its exceptional tactility, texture and natural beauty - whether it is used in industrial products, or in furniture and other utilitarian objects with a small production run, or in unique, one-off pieces.

Wood is fascinating. It is a valuable raw material with unique qualities, a living material that evolves through growth, and has already experienced an entire life before being transformed into an object. Its properties arise during the growth of the plant itself, as well as after it has been harvested, once it undergoes treatment and processing. This is what endows each piece of wood with its own personality and character. Wood assumes a certain status and commands respect. It makes demands of its treatment and processing. Wood carries with it, in its mass and texture, the very vestiges of life. Organic, expressive and warm. Sometimes wood is soft, sometimes hard; it splits easily or not at all; it shrinks and buckles and is more susceptible or less susceptible to the environment. As an organism from nature, wood speaks to the imagination, its boundaries are tested to the very smallest detail and when it is transformed into objects, those objects have a soul.
