This is Design is a celebration of the Design Museum's Collection, which examines the impact of design on the modern world, whilst also exploring the consequences of design and how it shapes our lives and contemporary culture.

Details:

To coincide with the opening of the Design Museum’s latest exhibition, ‘This is Design’, the museum has announced two major acquisitions to its Collection: Britain’s celebrated red telephone box, donated by BT and a set of traffic lights designed by David Mellor.

The acquisitions are both featured in ‘This is Design’ which celebrates and features highlights from the museum’s Collection including the Anglepoise lamp, UK road signs, UK traffic lights, the candlestick telephone and the Moulton bicycle.

European Design Leadership Board chosen

In line with the commitment taken in the Innovation Union, the European Commission launches in 2011 the European Design Innovation Initiative (EDII) to exploit the full potential of design for innovation.

The goal of the initiative is to:
- raise the awareness of design as a driver of innovation in Europe.
- enhance its role as a key discipline to bring ideas to market transforming them into user-friendly and apealing products, processes or services by enterprises and public services in the EU.

EDII Secretariat is based in Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland.

BEDA Members Invited to European Design Leadership Board

At the invitation of European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani, (BEDA) President, Deborah Dawton (United Kingdom) and Vice-President Isabel Roig (Spain), attended the first meeting of the newly established European Design Leadership Board which took place in Helsinki on Friday 27 May 2011.

SEE Project Final Conference

Purpose of event:
This conference is the project’s final event and aims to provide delegates with an overview of design’s role in innovation, recent design policy developments in Europe, examples of successful design policies and promotion programmes. The programme will be opened by Polish MEP, Jan Olbrycht with reflections on design as part of the Europe 2020 strategy. During the day, the SEE project lead partner will also briefly present the project’s achievements over the last three years.

The SEE project is a network of 11 European design organisations engaging with regional and national government to integrate design into policy, particularly innovation policy. The project runs from September 2008 to June 2011, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the INTERREG IVC programme.

In 2005 seventeen different design organisations in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden joined their forces and organised the World Design Congress (the joint congress for the three major international design organisations, ICSID, ICOGRADA and IFI), which is held every six years.
