The winners of the Joseph Binder Award 2014 – Austria’s International Competition for Graphic Design & Illustration – were honoured in an official award ceremony that took place at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier on 23 October 2014. After the ceremony, an exhibition of the prize-winning projects opened its doors at the designforum Wien.
63 design case studies shortlisted for the DBA Design Effectiveness Awards 2015
The Design Business Association has released the shortlist for this year’s highly coveted Design Effectiveness Awards.
Twenty-four projects by student groups from Spanish universities and design academies have been submitted for the second edition of the Design Culture Promotion Award organized by Surgenia, Andalusian Technological Centre of Design, and sponsored by Gustavo Gili Publisher.
2015 German Design Award – new structure and call for submissions
The German Design Council’s German Design Award steps forward to present a structural improvement in its fourth year of existence. The two areas - Excellent Product Design and Excellent Communications Design - will now function as separate formats under the umbrella brand German Design Award.
User-centered design is a key issue in the development of consumer devices, their success being literally determined in people’s hands. Devices that can be operated intuitively by diverse user groups enjoy greater success on the global market.
The Usability Award highlights valuable entrepreneurial competencies of future-oriented product brands: high design quality and thorough user orientation.
Hungarian Design Council: Design Management Award
The Design Management Award, established by the Hungarian Design Council, is announced. Nominations can be submitted by anyone who knows companies and organisations with strong design-consciousness, to recognise excellent examples of this.
DBA Design Effectiveness Awards: Call for Entries
The DBA Design Effectiveness Awards recognise and reward the integral role design plays in driving business growth. Entered jointly by both client and design agency, the awards are judged by senior business figures and use commercial data as a key judging criteria. A win is an independent endorsement of the value of your work, a great PR story, a motivator and reward for your team.

The Austrian designer Joseph Binder (1898–1972) had a crucial impact on commercial art in Europe and the United States. His motto was: »Everything in design has a function. Design has a visual function. Design has a communicational function. Design has a motivational function.« Joseph Binder found answers to questions regarding the contemporary spirit and its philosophy, the sources of inspiration, and the role to be played by the modern designer in the reduced and impressive visual language of his graphic design. Today, in a new millennium, Joseph Binder’s principles have lost nothing of their relevance.
designaustria, established in 1927, is Austria’s oldest design association, Joseph Binder having been one of its founding fathers. designaustria does not differentiate between the individual design disciplines, but between qualified and unqualified. It represents the interests of designers and illustrators who attach great importance to creative work of superior quality, thereby recognising both short-lived and profit-oriented visual communication and longer-lasting graphic design solutions as integral parts of everyday culture. designaustria first launched the Joseph Binder Award in 1996. This international performance showcase for graphic design & illustration is held every two years in the form of a competition.
Participation in the Joseph Binder Award 2014 is open to professional graphic designers and illustrators and to design students from all over the world. They may enter projects in the fields of graphic design and illustration (print) published or realised in 2012 and after. The works entered will be assessed by an international jury of experts. In 13 categories, a Joseph Binder Award in gold, silver, and bronze will be awarded in the form of trophies. In order to support independent, conceptual, and scientific activities in the fields of graphic design and illustration, money prizes will be awarded in the Design Fiction category in addition to the trophies. Additionally, the jury may choose up to seven Merit Awards per category. The winners will be publicly announced in autumn 2014 within the framework of a festive presentation of the selected and prize-winning entries. On the occasion of the award ceremony, a catalogue will be produced containing all of the selected and prize-winning entries and introducing the members of the jury.

DBA Design Effectiveness Awards 2014 Winners Announced
The Design Business Association (DBA) announced the winners of the 2014 DBA Design Effectiveness Awards in a sell-out ceremony where over 500 guests gathered to recognise and reward the significant impact that design can have on business success. The ceremony was held at Tobacco Dock in London and was hosted for the second time by BBC business correspondent Simon Jack.
A record–breaking 65 projects secured Design Effectiveness Awards, which are notoriously hard to win. 12 Gold, 30 Silver and 23 Bronze Awards were presented on the night across a range of disciplines from packaging to service design. Special awards for International Export, Materials Innovation and the overall Grand Prix were also presented.
Taking home the most prestigious award of the night – the Grand Prix, for the project deemed the most compelling of all the Gold winners by the judges – were B&B Studio and their client Urban Fresh Foods for the much-loved BEAR brand. BEAR has become the fastest growing brand in healthy snacking; it has delivered over 30million portions of fruit in the UK in 2012, reflected in rapid sales growth from £0 to £6.4m in 3 years.
The International Export Award was presented to DewGibbons + Partners and DHU (Deutsche Homöopathie-Union) for their Mama Natura brand – the world’s first global brand of children’s homeopathic medicine, which has seen a 30% rise in monthly sales, alongside a 10% reduction in production costs.
The Design For Society category (recognising design that has impacted people’s lives for the better) saw a Gold awarded to The Team and the Gas Safe Register for Silent Killer –a design solution to motivate long-term behaviour change, which has increased the number of higher risk households having annual gas safety checks by a staggering 300%.
Elmwood held onto their position at the top of the DBA Design Effectiveness League Table for the fifth year, winning another 6 awards, including a Gold for Gressingham Duck, along with three Silver and two Bronze Awards. The League Table is calculated every year based on the results of the past three years, acknowledging the most consistently effective agencies.

Vision in Motion - László Moholy-Nagy Design Grant
The winning designs of the László Moholy-Nagy Grant holders in 2013 proved again the central role design plays in enhancing competitiveness: the young talents worked on objects, collections and concepts that could be turned into marketable products with strong focus on user needs. The exhibition of the 2013 grantees, together with the Lajos Kozma Crafts and Design Grantees, will open in the Museum of Applied Arts, Budapest on the 20th February.
The László Moholy-Nagy Design Grant was established twenty five years ago with the objective of assisting young talented designers at the start of their careers, helping them realise their potential, to get from a concept to realised pilot projects, founding their own start up or long term cooperation. The Grant programme needed restructuring in order to keep up with the changed market environment. Experts reformulated the framework of conditions for the grant in accordance with the strengthening competition and various aspects of sustainability.
In connection with the restructuring of the grant by the Hungarian Design Council the experts recommended the application of some basic guiding principles: the grant should be of a six-month duration, which in certain justified cases should be extended by a maximum of one additional grant if the project’s objective has been realised. The monthly amount per head has been increased to 150,000 forints gross to ensure that the monetary grant follows inflation at the time.
The structure of the competition for 2013 was developed in the spirit of the new guiding principles. Efforts have been made to cooperate with the private sector. Accordingly, the 2013 grant is jointly financed by the Intellectual Property Office, the Ministry of Human Resources and for the first time by a prominent organisation within the business sphere, Herend Porcelain Manufactory Plc.
In 2014 the public-private cooperation is expanding. Besides Herend Porcelain Manufactory Plc. Mobilsofa Ltd., Je Suis Belle, and Multinetwork Ltd. are contributing to the grant, offering special topics, knowledge and manufacturing background for prototyping. The grantees of 2014 will be announced within the framework of the exhibition by the end of March.
