IN*VISIBLE
An exhibition on equality in design by Johanna Wicht and Christine Poplavski
Is the design industry gender-friendly? The creative industry considers itself to be woke and progressive, is often even seen as a pioneer for work transformations – the reality is unfortunately different. IN*VISIBLE is an exhibition that makes invisible problems of women and other underrepresented designers in Austria visible. Each exhibit takes up a gender-specific problem and shows that we are still faced with inequalities in the design industry. Because invisible problems cannot be solved, they must first be made visible.
Christine Poplavski and Johanna Wicht met during their master’s degree program at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences. Their common interest in feminist themes inspired them to create an exhibition on the subject of equality in the Austrian design industry. IN*VISIBLE was awarded a gold and a bronze nail by the Art Directors Club Germany in 2023.

Room for excitement
The fact is that more and more women are studying design and working in the creative industry – a state that has long been wished for. But what changes this majority? And what remains unchanged? A reflection on feminization and impending devaluation.
With over 15 years of experience in the design circus, as a burnt-out Employees, courageous founders and tireless Fighters present Kira Schinko and Letitia Lehner the “room for excitement” – a participatory Exhibition space for reflection on the feminization of the creative industry, their threatening devaluation, the gender Pay Gap (sic. it’s 2023!), pink tinted courses, exclusive Jury boy clubs, lack of diversity and outdated Leadership styles. Because especially young people find themselves in this world of work again.
The space for excitement should provide impulses for change and invites you to develop solutions together and thus the way for a more just and diverse to pave out the creative industry.
