History and future of directable light
How do you direct light simply and efficiently? Engineer Curt Fischer developed movable, freely positionable task lights, for which he created the Midgard brand. His patent from 1919 is the forerunner of many articulated lights for desks and workshops. Fischer’s products inspired Bauhäusler and architects such as Josef Frank, Friedl Dicker and Franz Singer incorporated them into residential interiors around 1930. Outstanding examples tell the story of steerable light. Christian Dell initially designed his ‘idell’ luminaires for the Viennese company Koranda, before they became a long seller in Germany thanks to an exchange of patents.
Students of Prof Stefan Diez at the Angewandte in Vienna are testing their technical and poetic visions for the steerable light of the future.
