BEDA and EUIPO Explores the Fostering of Intangible Design and IP Rights

On 24 September 2024, before the DesignEuropa Awards 2024 in Riga, BEDA organised a collaborative workshop “Fostering Intangible Design & IP Rights” bringing together the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) representatives, IP lawyers, and designers to discuss current design challenges and hot topics.

The workshop started with Expert presentations by Gundega Skudriņa (Skudras Metropole) & Mārcis Ziemiņš (Don’t Panic Design), Līga Fjodorova (Cobalt), Mārcis Miķelsons (Cube), and Alfonso Cid González (EUIPO) that followed with Round table discussions moderated by Christina Melander, Päivi Tahkokallio, Isabelle Vérilhac, Iiris Adenius, Anna Beáta Kohut-Jankó.

The workshop highlighted the critical importance of safeguarding intellectual property (IP) in a rapidly evolving design landscape. The workshop convened industry experts, policymakers, and designers to address challenges in IP protection, particularly in digital and service-based innovations. Through panel discussions, expert presentations, and interactive roundtables, participants explored key issues such as knowledge gaps, accessibility, and the impact of AI on IP. The event concluded with actionable recommendations, including enhanced education, regulatory reforms, and increased stakeholder collaboration, to empower designers and bolster Europe’s creative economy.
