Dutch Design Week 2021 – some highlights from the programme

Floris Alkemade, Natsai Audrey Chieza, and Christien Meindertsma are the ambassadors of the 20th edition of Dutch Design Week (DDW). They are developing three unique projects, giving their own interpretation of the DDW theme The Greater Number – our quest for the “better number” – a response to humanity’s rampant addiction to growth.

Alkemade’s Labyrinth of changing direction let visitors stroll and explore to find new perspectives. Meindertsma’s interactive installation Sharing elements brings the experience of the elements and particles we and all that surrounds us are made of. Chieza’s 3-day forum Bio Stories explores the complex dynamics surrounding synthetic biology: the design of living organisms.

Arne Hendriks learned in Okinawa about the term Hara Hacha Bu – ‘eat till you 80% full’. He named the village installation of secondhand renovated gardensheds likewise. It is a testing ground for enough instead of more.

CLICK.NL organises for the 9th year DRIVE. The hybrid and interactive DRIVE sessions can be joined from home. Each day a different challenge will be on the program – Mobility, Biobased and Circular Building, Health, Safety & privacy, Food & Water connecting with the work in the World Design Embassies. Apart from talks and knowledge exchange installation of the embassies give visitors the ‘tactile’ experience. For instance the Exploded View pavilion showing possible solutions for CO2 reduction in building. The World Design Embassy of Inclusive Society strives for the participation of all and welcomes everyone in the barbershop/hairdressers amidst visions on a society in which every citizen has a part and in which the notion of reciprocity is central.
