PDR Develops CO:RE Cards to Aid Collaboration in the Creative Community

PDR are proud to announce the arrival of CO:RE Cards, a tool designed to encourage dialogues, mutual learning and collaboration among creative practitioners.

Each card presents a different term or question intended as a prompt to spark conversation between creatives in sessions.

PDR is a partner organisation within the Media Cymru innovation pipeline, which aims to develop the growth of media-based projects in the Cardiff Capital region. PDR’s role as part of the pipeline is to enhance the projects’ understanding of Research & Development (R&D)and innovation through the application of design practices.

As such, PDR regularly facilitates conversations between creative practitioners at the cutting edge of innovative and emerging technologies. This birthed the idea of CO:RE Cards as a concept to help break down barriers between creatives as they interact, whilst also developing their understanding of R&D terminology.

Jo Ward, Senior Designer – Researcher, PDR said:
“We wanted to help people become more comfortable talking about R&D and innovation terms, share insights into their practice and do this with people they might not have spoken to before. That’s a big ask for people! But we have proven our theory – using the cards helps break down those barriers to engagement and prompts people to develop understanding through conversations. They’ve been shown to change people’s perceptions based around their experiences being ‘greater’ than others, and that there are commonalities and connections between people that they would not have made without these conversations being facilitated by the CO:RE deck.”

PDR Post-Doctoral Design Researcher, Dr Safia Suhaimi’s paper “Ideas are really…” – supporting collaborative dialogues and community of practice for innovation via CO:RE cards published by the Cambridge University Press, explores the research behind CO:RE Cards and the evaluation of their practice. Safia presented her findings at DESIGN24 by The Design Society in Croatia, where she received a ‘Reviewer’s Favourite’ commendation.

PDR aims to continue gaining further insight into how CO:RE Cards can be used to provide value to the creative industries by supporting collaboration and innovation. One of the aims is to make design-led tools more accessible to wider creative communities. The digital deck of CO:RE Cards is available for access and download. If you use the deck, please tag PDR on LinkedIn (PDR International Centre for Design and Research) or Instagram (@pdr_design).
