READ Meeting with the Spanish Ministry of Culture

The Spanish National Network of Design Associations (READ) has arranged a meeting with the Ministry of Culture, at its own offices in Madrid, on 20 March 2025. This appointment comes as an interlocutor before a particular initiative on the development of the Statute of the Artist, which consists of a set of measures in the Labour, Social Security and Tax regulations, which aims to dignify the professional situation of creators, artists and other cultural workers, among which designers are to be included.

Juana Valcárcel and Daniel Hervás, coordinators of the Education and Design working group, will attend on the part of READ. The Ministry of Culture will be represented by Txema Urkijo, from the office of the Secretary of State for Culture, members of the Cultural Industries Coordination Centre and Francisco Villar, Head of Service of de Acción Cultural Española. The meeting will be completed by design professors Eva Iszoro and Juan Víctor Sánchez.

This meeting will also serve to present in general the work being carried out by the READ Education and Design working group. In particular, MIEDE’24, the Manifesto for Innovation in Design Education in Spain, in which the Ministry of Culture has shown great interest, will be presented. The main objective of this ambitious project is to create a framework document for innovation in design education that, from the perspective of the READ, can be useful for all agents of design education in Spain: students, educational centres and the design ecosystem (administrations, companies and society in general). MIEDE’24 proposes some general lines of improvement and modernization to achieve the transformation of the environment, the enhancement of educational innovation, and the improvement of society, through a balance between experimental freedom, rigour in competencies, and professional ethics.

MIEDE’24, having been presented at different national (Granada, Madrid, Valencia, Cuenca) and international (Amsterdam) events, is currently in a period of evaluation, for which there is an online form.

We invite the entire European design education community to read the manifesto and evaluate it using this form.
