The “Initiatives to Boost the Creative Economy” Report Presents a Forward-Thinking Framework to Position Barcelona and Catalonia as Global Leaders in the Creative Economy

Creative Economy is about the relationship between creativity and economics, being the creative sector an important source of sustainable growth in the global economy.
According to John Howkins, author of the influential book The Creative Economy: How People Make Money from Ideas, the creative economy revolves around the business of ideas—it is about transforming ideas into marketable products and services.

The vision of the Barcelona Creativity & Design Foundation is to position Barcelona as a global benchmark in business creativity and the Creative Economy, consolidating it as the city of ideas. Its mission is to structure Barcelona’s Creative Economy, collaborating with the sector’s professional and business community and developing its ecosystem to demonstrate the value that creativity brings to any business. With this aim, the organisation works to promote the city as a pole of attraction for creative talent and interdisciplinary innovation, capable of responding to global challenges from the potential of its local strengths.

With an integrated perspective that connects global trends with local needs, this report examines future scenarios that address key challenges and opportunities for the creative sectors and the Creative Economy in general. It aims to raise awareness of the Creative Economy, provide the tools for competitiveness, and offer strategic scenarios to guide collaborative policy and action in Barcelona and Catalonia.

This report positions Barcelona not only as a hub of creative production but also as a test bed for new models of economic and social development. The convergence of creativity, innovation and political strategy will define the next stage of the competitiveness of the Creative Economy.

The report has been carried out within the framework of the PICOBELLO project (INTERREG EUROPE interregional cooperation programme, co-funded by the European Union), with KEPA (Business and Cultural Development Centre) as one of the project partners.
