The BEDA Club of Glorious 42
In “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams, the fictional supercomputer Deep Thought’s answer to “the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything” is 42. Deep Thought couldn’t provide a more detailed answer but predicted that the best computational power – an organic computer: the Earth – would be able to reply in the future.
While BEDA doesn’t know what the future holds, our pool of experts – known as the Glorious 42 – are committed to investigating the world’s challenges and contributing to the world’s biggest questions.
Wicked problems and the power of design and design methodology
There is no question, that we all live in changing times – from the war in Europe to climate change, the all present danger of a pandemic and the needed transformational process of the EU Industrial Ecosystem. Right now, we can not know the kind of topics or questions that will come up. But, we can prepare – hence BEDA set up the ‘Club of the Glorious 42’ – Experts from various fields of Design.

Material 2030 Manifesto – how the Glorious 42 played a part shaping the framework for Advanced Materials for Prosperity.
Materials, especially advanced materials, are the backbone of prosperity for an industrial society. In the context of the radical transformational changes of the 21st century, these advanced materials will play a vital role.
On this basis and following a roundtable discussion with Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, a dedicated group of experts together with Barth Ashmann from CLICKNL (a past BEDA President and board member), developed an ambitious manifesto. This Materials 2030 Manifesto not only focuses on a technical and industrial perspective but also considers the human-centred design aspects.
