Designing Sustainability: BEDA Joins the EU’s Ecodesign Forum
The Ecodesign Forum gains strategic support from our Board member Marika Aakesson, who serves as BEDA’s main expert in ecodesign – the largest organisation representing professional designers in Europe.
The European Commission created the Group of experts on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products and Energy Labelling (‘the Ecodesign Forum’) to involve stakeholders in shaping the implementation of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). The Forum acts as the main consultation platform where a broad range of stakeholders and key ecodesign actors collaborate to develop future product requirements that promote durability, reparability and circularity.

BEDA contributes to the Forum by representing the design community and bringing design-based insights into EU policymaking on sustainable products. Designers play a crucial role in achieving circularity — their choices in materials, production, form and function determine how long a product lasts and how easily it can be reused or recycled.
“Design is key to the circular economy. Choices in materials, production, form, and function shape a product’s lifecycle and impact. Designers must be involved from the start in decision making, using their methodology and creative thinking to drive sustainable circular solutions to accelerate progress toward greener products.”

Through the Ecodesign Forum, BEDA will work on ensuring that design perspectives are integrated into the development of the Commission’s 2025-2030 Working Plan under the ESPR, which identifies key product categories such as textiles, furniture, tyres, and metals. The working plan also highlights horizontal measures including repairability, recycled content and digital product passports — all areas where design innovation is essential.
By participating in the Ecodesign Forum, BEDA strengthens the bridge between design practice and policy. This collaboration ensures that future European products are not only sustainable but also functional, appealing and designed for long-term value.
