Design Creates Value – For Sustainable Growth and Prosperity

November 2024 was a milestone for global design, as Taiwan hosted the Taiwan International Student Design Competition 2024 (TISDC) Award Ceremony and the International Design Knowledge Exchange Meeting. These events highlighted the transformative power of design in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.

Christina Melander, BEDA President, joined the award ceremony and gathering of global design leaders. Earlier this year Piotr Swiatek, BEDA Treasurer, participated in the TISDC jury process. Read about this experience here.

The student competition’s honorary mentions and winners were particularly inspiring. Each design concept addressed real-world challenges affecting the planet, society, and people while demonstrating significant business potential. This reaffirmed the critical role design plays in driving sustainable growth and competitiveness.

The breadth and depth of these concepts emphasised a critical truth: business success can align seamlessly with solving environmental and social challenges. This shared commitment to impactful design fuels optimism for a sustainable future.

BEDA was honoured to present a Special Award to Huan-Chi Liao and Angyuan Liu from Domus Academy, Italy, for their exceptional work, “Amphie”.

Special recognition is due to Don Chen, Professor Apex Lin, and the dedicated TISDC team for organising the “D21” meeting. “D21” united 21 prestigious international design organisations, including key figures such as Pradyumna Vyas (WDO), Lorenzo Imbesi (Cumulus Association), Rachel Wye (Good Design Australia), Stefan Anderl (German Design Council), and Felix Ofori Dartey (Pan Afrika Design Institute).

This collaborative platform facilitated the exchange of ideas, the strengthening of shared narratives, and a unified vision for design’s transformative potential on a global scale. It underscored that we are stronger together, far more uniting us than dividing us in the pursuit of a better world.

To further this momentum, BEDA encourages all to read and sign the BEDA Position Paper, “Design in Europe – For Sustainable Growth and Prosperity”. Read and sign here.
Together, the design community can continue to drive innovation, sustainability, and prosperity for all.
